I've read some interesting articles but I can't seem to find a consensus on the best way to increase the range of my wireless router.

Problem is simple.....my router is in my office, it reaches to about 75% of my house. Basement and kitchen are out of range. Anyone have any suggestions on how I can increase this range? I looked at those Cantennas but they seemed kinda bulky and sloppy.

Thank you.

Hi Camster,
It kind of depends on what kind of Router you have. If it is a brand (like Linksys) that the antennas are removable, it is pretty easy.
Check out Go to Antennas on the left column, then click 2.4Ghz, In building and Range extenders. Under the “2.4 GHz Range Extender Antennas” section, the first one should suit your fancy.

If your router has fixed antennas, you may have to work a bit harder. Like taking your router apart and soldering a lead on.
Good luck!

I've got a Netgear MR314 wireless routers. I didn't see Netgear listed HyperGain® RE05T5 dBi Omni Directional Antenna ----- does this matter?

Also, can you give me a idiots guide to how I hook up this thing. Does this physically have to connect to my router (via a cable) in order to boost the range? Or would this thing sit somewhere in the middle of my house (where I am currently getting a signal) in hopes of boosting the signal to reach areas that are currently inaccessible (basement, kitchen etc...).

Thanks very much for the info.

Can you remove the antenna from the back of the MR314? Looking at the picture on NetGear's website, it looks like the antenna is fixed onto the back of the router. If it is fixed, you will not be able to add a higher gain antenna to get better range.

The antennas on HyerTech must be connected to the wireless access point. Unfortunately there really isn't a simple device that can just be placed somewhere in the house to boost the signal of the MR314....

Oh well.......I'll probably end up trying this Powerline networking thing instead to get to my router from the basement.

Thanks again.
