I put together a new computer after my old motherboard went out on me. I did a repair installation of XP Pro. Its a Intel Core Duo with a gig of RAM and a 512 MB Nvidia PCI Express video card. I was using the built in sound on the motherboard (Gigabyte). Im running XP Pro SP2.

When I play any type of video or audio whether its an avi, mpeg or MP3 on my hard drive or a streaming video from You Tube etc it will slow down and get choppy for a few seconds and then be fine. It will be random when it does it too. I updated the video card driver but that didnt help. I put in a PCI Soundblaster card and it still does it.

My friend built a new Core Duo PC this after I did and he is having the same problem. Could it be something with the Core Duo processor?

You could have a look at this in case it applies?

Computers that are running Windows XP Service Pack 2 and that are equipped with multiple processors that support processor power management features may experience decreased performance

Skippy Sound in Media Player

I installed the update and tried the registry edit and it still does it. Its not a WMP thing since it does it with online videos and sounds as well within web pages. My friend who has the same problem will do it on video games.

The HAL under Device Manager is set to ACPI Multiprocessor PC. XP Pro supports 2 processors doesnt it?

Have you tried running DxDiag or checking that you have the latest DirectX version?

I tried the things from your link but no go. I did find out that my CPU operates at 1066 MHz but the motherboard only supports 800. I wonder if thats part of it? I'm sure its backwards compatible but could the processor be putting out more than the motherboard bus can handle?

Have you updated your BIOS and motherboard drivers? They dont always ship up to date with the latest drivers on the CD. Your BIOS may be having issues with your CPU and need updates.

I did a BIOS update and it seemed to work but then it did it again. So far its not as bad but Ill have to give it some time.

I have the same issue! (well I am the guy wasisnt mentions).

I am running a GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 LGA 775 Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard with Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80557E6600.

I think the issue is with the Gigabyte motherboard. What is wierd though is that my last MB was also a gigabyte and it didn't have this problem. But I wasn';t running an intel CPU, just an old Athalon XP1600+.

Googling doesn't seem to bring up much on this issue. Anyone have any other ideas?

Can I post the same message there without worrying about having an identical message in 2 different areas?

I don't see why not. You could cross link the threads too, and also post the final solution in the forum that doesn't end up with it.

Hola,

Choppy playback can be caused by various things, such as old/corrupt drivers to SATA drives/drivers interfering...

I would suggest to download the latest CODECs or Codec Pack, from a site like like the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack (contains all the codecs you will ever need and has alternatives for both QT and RealMedia integrated)...

if this does not alleviate the problems, with playback, then I would suggest you both look at the following links:

Also make sure that the CHIPSET Drivers are uptodate... then install the latest GFX Drivers for the card you are using...

set your Virtual Mem (pagefile.sys) to a static value @1.5 times the installed Mem... ie. you have 512mb installed, the pagefile should be 1.5 gig...

I would also suggest that you both list the background running processes and or what/which antiviral solution you are using... ie. Norton etc... easiest way to do so would be to post a HiJackThis log file... that way I can see what is running that can be shut down etc...

Ive done a codec pack, updated chipset drivers, updated the BIOS and updated the video driver.

I also installed Vista on another partition and it does the same thing so I dont think its a process or any software in general.

My pagefile for C is 1500-3000 and I have 2 gigs of RAM.

Are the Drives in use SATA? CD/DVD?

do you have an USB Drive or a Flash Drive? try and copy a file over to it and see if the stuttering is there aswell...

All the drives are SATA. The DVD Burner is IDE. It copies files fine.

I replaced the motherboard and did a repair installation and it still did it.

Then I put my old motherboard back in and didn't have the option for the repair installation so something got hosed. So I formatted and reinstalled everything from scratch with a new hard drive. I also replaced my video card since my fan was seized on my old one. It still does it with a fresh installation too!

So basically Ive replaced the motherboard, video card, sound card, hard drive and formatted and reinstalled Windows all with the same results. Next Im going to play with the RAM and see what happens.
