Hello,

Having an issue with Vista on one of my user's laptops. It would appear that several services are crashing and restarting and then crashing again and so on and so on. So far I have seen this happen to the following services:

Windows Audio
Event Viewer
DHCP client

The cute little Vista notification pops up that the service has stopped working and I should "check online for a solution", which of course does nothing surprise, surprise...

Error looks something like this (Just substitute various application names in place of DHCP):

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: svchost.exe_Dhcp
Application Version: 6.0.6000.16386
Application Timestamp: 4549adc4
Fault Module Name: stapo.dll
Fault Module Version: 1.0.5609.0
Fault Module Timestamp: 46e0b6fb
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Offset: 000638e0
OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033
Additional Information 1: a8ad
Additional Information 2: 60ed6f79268854e32d9a93c5cf95a498
Additional Information 3: 5ae4
Additional Information 4: e3d883ffc127a7e2f959d6d97a7f09f9

Additionally, my event log (when I'm able to access it) is FILLED with the following error constantly repeating several times per minute:

Log Name: System
Source: Service Control Manager
Date: 1/9/2008 2:03:18 PM
Event ID: 7023
Task Category: None
Level: Error
Keywords: Classic
User: N/A
Computer: JUNO
Description:
The Network List Service service terminated with the following error:
Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.

Beyond that, I suspect issues with the RPC service since on the occasion Vista is gracious enough to show me the event viewer, all entries are replaced by "RPC server unavailible"

Any advice? (other than a reformatting preferrably)

Thanks in advance.

Thought it might be prudent to say I've already tried re-installing network and audio drivers to no avail. Also, just to clarify that the audio service in particular is extremely peculiar as such that the speaker icon in the system tray gets a red X over it, simultaneous to recieving the crashed service message, but then a couple minutes later the X goes away but the device will not make sound.

Similar problem with the network icon in the system tray. It seems to always have an X through even when the connection is working as intended.

c0000005 errors often have their roots in Access Permissions troubles.

Services permissions

Rough notes on setting and checking Services Permissions (I did say rough, damned hard to find a decent link))

Open Security Templates in Console Root (MMC).

Select security template (ie. workstation, setup security, or Windows XP Legacy Security - v1.0.1).

Expand security template and select System Service.

Right-click Service name to access Properties.

Check "Define this policy setting in template"

You can then access the Security permissions (you may or may not have to click on Edit Security, this just depends on the actual Service settings (ie. Disabled etc.) whether the Security permissions page displays automatically or not).
