I have been running 2000 for a while now and the annoyance I have is that sometime icons appear in the system tray and sometimes they do not. Matrox powerdesk is the biggest offender, everything is up to date and it still seems to depend on the day of week as to whether the icon appears or not. MSN messenger also seems to have this problem but not so often. Anybody got any ideas as it is beating me and is now getting to the point irritating.

It's almost certainly a profiles issue - maybe sometimes you do not get your profile, but a default copy instead?

Is the PC networked?

No the PC does not learn its profiles from a network, in that respect it is stand alone. It is networked to my Linux Box but just for more storage and development. I do log in with a username and password. I'll give the profiling a look, when it plays up i do get the error bong from the speakers.

Next time you see those icons, you might wanna check task manager(press ctrl+alt+del) to find out what is running.
Another thing to check is Event Viewer (control panel; administative tools; event viewer ) check application and system logs to find out what is the state of your system.
