RAM Upgrade

I have Gateway PC with Windows XP. I want to upgrade my RAM currently has a 256 in the first slot. The second slot is empty.

If I purchase 1 GB RAM would I get better performance if I replace the 256 stick in the first slot or just add the new RAM in the second slot?

I would just buy a 1 GB stick or 2 512 sticks. Adding RAM of different sizes and speeds can cause weird things to happen. Be sure to resize your pagefile as well after you add RAM.

Between diff. sizes - I have not found any problems yet...

between dif. speeds - only that the slowest speed of the ram is been used... ie. PC3200 and PC2700 both would run on PC2700...

but the suggestion that he use 2 x 512mb sticks instead of a 1gb stick, is very good, since there are motherboards still out there that do not accept 1gb sticks at all...
