This might be a stupid question,but... I inherited some high end RAM (Corsair XMS 1 gig x 2) it is pc4000, i have an AMD 3200, on an ASUS A7V880 MB. I understand that I should be using pc3200 RAM(I have 2 512MB DDR sticks in there now), however, I was wondering if it would work on my machine. The new ram is 184 pin,non ECC, same as my pc3200

that's fine... it'll slow down the ram a little but ram of that quality should have no probs overclocking I would have thought or just keep it normal and it should work rather nicely.

It shouldn't slow down the current RAM unless the timings are slower. The timings are those specs you see that look like 3-3-4-5 for example. The higher the numbers, the more clock cycles it takes for each position.

Faster RAM like PC4000 tend to have higher numbers and are therefore usually slower than PC3200 standard memory. The advantage they play is in overclocking only.

Bottom line: You probably won't notice any slowness because of it, although technically, it will likely force the other module to run a tad slower.

yeah, the slowdown will be negligible but personally it's always a risk I'd run...
