Hey everyone quick question if anyone has done this before.

I have a V215 that originally only one drive was setup in it. We now have a second drive and want to use the hardware raid. My questions are:

1) Do I need to format the second drive to match the slice sizes first ahead of time?

2) Will the data on the first drive be lost once I create the hardware raid?

I plan on doing a ufsdump either way ahead of time just in case, but I've never tried to take an active drive and do this before so any insite is always helpful, or if anyone has any lessons learned from doing this already.

Thank you

Are you going to use Disksuite/SVM? That would be the next option. Then the answers are:
1) you need to repartition the second drive. (not format)
2) if you don't have space for a metadb slice, then you need to carve one out about 30-40 MB or so. (usually, the swap space is the best candidate so you don't have to dump/restore)
3) if you mirror in the right direction, no data is lost (except for data on the second drive)
