Hi all,

We plan on obtaining some new Dell servers to run MS SQL 2005.

We will run the OS on a RAID 1, what do you recommend for the data partition for MS SQL 2005 databases? RAID 5 or RAID 10?

Thanks

If there are no stupid questions, then what kind of questions do stupid people ask? Do they get smart just in time to ask questions?

depends on what you are doing as well and budget etc

ie differnet answer if database is for 10 people as apose to 100's

Cost isnt an issue.

Database runs our ecommerce site which can have 50+ people on at a time

Cost not an issue....
After reading the link, you should come to the conclusion of using raid 10(with a hot spare),6 15k SAS drives would be nice (add a hot spare for sure), with the hotest battery backed, hardware controller you can obtain..along with a quad core server with tons of ram and a 64 bit OS to be able to utilize it, like a 3.0 Ghz 2900III or better, preferably better, as the 2900III has Broadcrap network interfaces. Adaptec just released the next generation SAS raid adapter last month, LSIlogic(Perc) is now behind.
Then again, if cost is really not an issue, for the raid 1, I would get Mitron SSD drives <grin>

Chernobyl disaster..a must see pictorial

As cost isn't as issue RAID 10 will give you the best write performance.

However keeping budget in mind RAID 5 will work just fine for probably 90% of SQL Server installs.
