Hi all. I am currently using Proliant DL380 with Redhat 7.1.
Currently, this mail relaying is using RAID 1 mirroring between (2)9.1GB harddisk.

If i were to add a new 9.1GB harddisk, solely for upsizing the /home space.

Should i remain using the OS as RAID 1 and the new harddisk as RAID 0 for data ?

or reconfigure whole server as RAID 5 ?? and will i have to setup the whole server from scratch ?

raid 0 : no data protection (not good)
raid 5 : backup- restore server from backup (tape)
(backup server: braik raid 1, create raid 5, restore)

less config time: buy 2 disks and mirror them ;-)

sincerely
Bart

i never do a full restore before.

Do i have to install the OS again and then
restore all the filesystem files from the
backup tape ??

euuuh,
this is the point where i'll have to point you to the linux (server) forum

cause I haven't done this on a linux system (I'm a microsoft orientated engineer)

on microsoft os's i perform a full backup, recreate a raid set (eg: raid 5) make the system partition (compaq smartstart does this all) partition , install a temp nt or a basic w2k and have my os restored from backup;

never had any problems following that procedure

I hope somebody will go deeper in the linux os based part of this procedure in the linux forum

hope this helped a bit

Bart

No re-install needed (Linux or Microsoft) depending on the array controller you have. If your array controller has write-caching (and it not an older Smart-2) on it, you can boot off the SmartStart CD (use a 5.x version) and run the ACU to "migrate" your array from one type to another
(0->1 ; 1->5 ; 0->1, etc).

If you have an integrated or non-write controller, see if you can borrow a 3200 or higher from someone long enough to do the migration and then you can give it back to them and go back to your integrated controller.
