We are performing hardware tests with 4 * 18.2GB disks in a Raid 5 configuration. One of the tests involves removing a Physical disk from the Raid to prove the system will still run with 1 disk failure. But what do you have to do once the disk is inserted back into the array. We have a CR3500 Array controller card. The same test will be performed on another Proliant Server with 2 * 18.2 GB disks in a Raid 1 configuration, will this be the same as building the Raid 5 disks?. Any help will be appreciated.

Put the disk back in and rebuild will begin automatically.

You can check this through the array configuration util (ACU) (can be installed from smartstart cdrom)

with this util you can set rebuild priority to 100 % to make rebuild faster (wait till disks are rebuild to do this (change this setting if you wish to use it before you do your test operation))

Raid 1 or raid 5: rebuild should start immediatley

hope this helps you further
