Some advice please.

New to Linux. Using Red Hat 8.0 for first time. Currently experimenting with it as a server to an accounting system using Samba. Previously on Novell. Seems to be working.

I have the new Intel S845WD1 (P4 motherboard) server that has IDE RAID. I have two 80G IDE drives. Any ideas as to how I can make use of this with RH 8.0? Currently using the standard IDE channels. I found some drivers for RH 7.2 and tried them on 7.3 and now 8.0, but they do not work. At least not for me. I don't have 7.2 and am so new to Linux that I feel I'm in a power failure zone.

I also have a Seagate Travan 40 IDE backup tape drive. Can I use that with Linux (in particular RH 8) and where can I find / get more info / drivers for this?

I'm keen on trying this but scared to give it to the client at this stage. I have one more day to experiment and test.

Is this your card?
"3 Ware 7000-2 2 port Low Profile IDE RAID Controller Card"

For your travan tape drive...I don't
know too much about this particular
tape drive or interface but this company
has software that supports it seemingly:

Hi,

No.

The RAID controller on the Intel S845WD1 motherboard is a "Promise" chipset. Looked at the promise site but could not find anything for RH 8.0. The actual chipset is PDC20267 and that is a bit of a problem as well as the models on the Promise site are not the same.

Appears there is no driver for RH8.0 and the 7.3 one does not work. At least not for me. The Promise one does not work either. So am reduced to loading RH 7.3 on this server.

I don't know what to say to this.
Can you not use the installation directions for the driver
or is there a problem possibly with your modutils and
loading of the driver module?
Can you tell us what steps you have taken?
Otherwise just saying it doesn't work...that is
not going to be a lot of help ;)

Good point.

We downloaded the driver from the Intel site (we are Intel IPI's) and followed the instructions. We then thought we were doing the wrong thing as the instructions are for RH 7.3. So we hired in a Linux expert who has qualified as support engineer. He has worked on RH since version 5 or 6 (can't remember exactly).

He followed the Intel instructions and explained what each step was doing. He was surprised it did not work. So we tried the drivers off the Promise site to see if they would work. No go there either.

So we said o.k. lets try them on RH 7.3 and confirm that they do work with our gear. This was successful. Hence the conclusion that the drivers work for 7.3 but not for RH 8.0. We could not find anyone else with V8.0 drivers.

Regards
