Hi,

I want to implement RAID 5 on one of the DC but my problem is simple volumes have already been created on the 4 hard drives. The data saved on these various drives is also in use. How can i still implement RAID 5 on these disks without corrupting the date.

Many Thanks,

Meg

Do the simple volumes take up the entire disk or is there still unallocated space on each disk?

If all of the space is being used on the disks. You will need to backup the data on the diskes that you want to create the RAID5 out of and then delete the volumes. Then create the RAID5 volume and restore the data.

If you are going to use unallocated space on the 4 disks just click on the disk with the smallest amount of allocated space first and then select the other disks.

One thing to keep in mind when you are going to use 2000's RAID5 is that the parity stripe is figured using the servers CPU which will slow down preformance on a server that see lots of use.

If at all posible hardware raid is always the best way to go.

There is very little space left on two disks out of four. I can always take the backup of the third disk to create the RAID 5 Volume. But as you say the speed of the server will be drastically reduced. How can you can then configure hardware RAID 5 ? I will appreciate all your help on this, I have been reading a lot about hardware RAID but not sure how to implement this.

Thanks in advance,
Meg
