Hi

I'm thinking about to change from raid level 1 to level 5.

If I'm right the raid 5 configuration is better for random
reading/writing than raid 1.

So the question is, which raid configuration has the better
data i/o transfer rate, this is a heavily loaded file server.

RAID1 is in fact worse for writing than RAID1. With RAID5, every write requires a recalculation of the parity for the strip you just wrote. RAID1 just mirrors the writes. If you are looking at better performance, try RAID-10 (striping + mirroring).

RAID5 will perform better on reads that RAID1. Either RAID level (1 or 5) can lose a single drive and not be affected.
