Hi,current Dell PE server has Raid 1 set up at the moment and I was thinking to upgrade the server application to the newer version, b4 I do that I like to take a image of it, can I just unplug one of the Raid disk and install a new one there, so that I have the image ready if the upgrade didn't go smoothly.

Many thanks,

That is an option... If you have to back out, make sure you bring the server up with only the old drive in it. Otherwise you risk re-syncing the old drive with the disk that has been upgraded. If things go well, just keep the old disk around for other upgrades.

do you have any other recommended server image software? it is painful if I have to purchase a bunch drive for over 10 servers.

thanks again

Acronis True Image. You can get the Universal Restore add-on that lets you restore to different hardware. Excellent product.

I'll second Lawnboy, I use Acronis with the universal restore, excellent other than price.

Considering a spare raid 1 drive as an image provides an instantaneous restore, the price is not bad. Have a client who pulls a raid 1 disk every week for an image. Be aware the mtbf is 500 cycles on backplane connectors, believe the same on drive connectors; only way around this is to use mobile drive racks with a high mtbf.
