okay.,,,question- there is not doubt that the WD VelociRaptor is probably the fastest single serial ata hard drive in existance, i will not arque that...but would it not be better to just buy a couple of segate 7200.11 320gb seagate barracuda, and run them in raid 0 ....you are looking at $100 vs $300..

raid 0 vs WD VelociRaptor

It depends upon what your after:
Fastest app performance = VelociRaptor, period.
Highest Throughput = RAID 0.
Best data protection = VelociRaptor, b/c with RAID 0 your risk increases.
However, from reviews I've seen on NewEgg, it sounds like the 300GB version, I believe it is, of the VelociRaptor has given some people fits with crashing early. But on the whole, I think people have had no problems.
I personally have 2 74GB Raptors with 16MB Cache each. RAID 0 with those was really nice, but was on older hardware - CPU/Mainboard. Since I upgraded my CPU/Mainboard, I haven't tried RAID 0 yet (may actually soon), but just the single RAPTOR makes a really nice difference in everything - Windows startup, Audio editing, Video editing, Gaming, etc.
If you are looking for accross the board performance, you can't go wrong with the Raptor or VelociRaptor especially. If I had money to burn, I'd seriously think of grabbing up at least the 150GB VelociRaptor if not the 300GB version.
And actually, if you could afford it, you could put 3 of those in a RAID 5 or similar array and have speed, throughput, and redundancy.
As far as what drives have the most throughput, performance, etc, you can look at the detailed reports at Tom's Hardware:

thanks..i posted this in some other forums...lot of folks badmouth raid,....i like it ,,,things just seem to flow smoother on my raid couputer..sort of hard to exlain...i have read that the hitachi 1gb if pretty fast too....i don,t have funds to burn..or i might run dual 300gb raptors....later
