bought a radeon 9250 pci card and am having trouble getting my compost to take it. no mobo jumpers to ignore on board graphics. once i got the drivers to install i found an option in bios to change the primary display driver. tried that and the pc wouldn't even boot (tho i think it posts). pulling the card out and putting it back in a different pci slot allows me to boot again. i'm guessing an irq issue? anyway, so friggin' frustrating. stupid compaq. i should just build my own system.
how do i get the friggin card to take?
also, navigating win98se to the display applet shows three monitors, each using a different driver, 1 onboard, 1 radeon, and 1 radeon (secondary). stupid computer, i only have 1 monitor.
w h a t d o i d o ?

Check for a item in BIOS to disable the onboard video adapter.

If that is N/A, then:
1. Start in Safe mode, and uninstall the new video card's software in 'Add/Remove Programs'.
2. Remove the new video card from Device Manager, and click OK.
3. Shut down the computer(do not restart if prompted after clicking OK in step 2), and remove the video card from the MB.
4. Restart, right click on the Desktop, and select Properties.
5. Click on the Settings tab, then the Advance button.
6. Click on the Adapter tab, then the Change button.
7. On the first Wizard screen, hit the Next button.
8. On the next screen, select 'Display a list of all the drivers......', then hit Next.
9. On the next screen, select 'Show all Hardware', then highlight 'Standard Display Types' at the top, then in the right window, select 'Standard Display Adapter VGA, Microsoft, 5-11-98', then hit Next(Note: You may be asked to insert the 98 upgrade CD to load the driver).
10. If Windows asks if you want to restart, click NO.
11. Shut down the computer, and install the new video card.
When you reboot, Windows should detect the new card, and ask you to install the drivers for it.

If no luck, then:
1. Repeat steps 1-3 above.
2. Restart, right click on the Desktop, click Properties/Settings/Advanced/Adapter/Properties/Disable, click OK, and shut down the computer(Do not restart if prompted to do so).
3. Install the new video card, reboot, and install its drivers.

If still no luck, then:
1. Repeat steps 1-3 in the above 1st set of instructions.
2. Restart, open Device Manager, click on the onboard video adapter, check the box for 'Disable in this hardware profile', click OK, and shutdown(Do not restart if prompted to do so).
3. Install the new video card, reboot, and install its drivers.

Thanks to ski for your time and your help.

Ultimately I got the card to work by updating a very outdated BIOS.

After flashing the ROM, enabling the card in BIOS turned the trick.

You're welcome.
Kudos on solving your problem, and thanks for posting the fix.
