I have this computer :

The link will show all the specs, and it came with Windows Vista. I formatted my hard drive and installed Windows XP and installed Service Pack 2. I purchased a new 650 Watt power supply and a new Ati Radeon 4850 video card. The problem is that when I insert the ATI Radeon into the PC, and boot up the computer, I have no sound.

I have tried un-installing, and re-installing the sound card drivers, however nothing works. The only thing that seems to work is to remove the ATI card completely, and the sound works fine just using onboard video.

I'm not sure what to do, can anyone help?

Have you checked Device Manager when the problem is happening (both sound and Radeon installed) to see if there are any conflicts/exclamation/question marks?

Maybe disable (onboard??) sound and install video first, making sure that there are no problems in Device Manager. Reboot once just to make sure.

Then, get the latest driver for sound and re-enable sound card and point it to the new drivers.

Just a thought.

The 4850 supports sound output over HDMI, I think, so it will probably be listed as an available sound output device. Go into Control Panel and double-click 'Sounds and Audio Devices' then go to the 'Audio' tab. Make sure that your sound card is selected under 'default device', rather than the 4850.
