I have a [banghead] here....

From the directions, which does not seem like it would be from Nortel:

Connect the FastRad to an available COM port on your PC. . Use a straight through cable to connect to the RAD. DO NOT use the cable configured for direct connection to the RAD!
Don't plug the power cable in yet.
From the RAD upgrade tool select your COM port and choose a speed of 19200 baud.
In the RAD upgrade tool Select File then Connect.
Now plug the power cable into the FastRAD.
This will initiate the upgrade. During the process, dots will move across the screen, indicating data transfer. If you do not see this within a few seconds, check your cable and connections. Remember, you cannot use the cable configured for direct connection to the RAD.

How do you configure a serial cable?

From what I recall is you just use the straight through serial cable to do the job but I do not recall this oddity of instructions.

I haven't used a RAD for many years now, but I did make my own cable up which were two 9 way RS232 connectors that used an Ethernet connection. As you know, they are only 8 wires and therefore I just used pins 1 to 8 and 9 was never connected. I had the same colours used for each connector.

Thanks guys, I do not have an issue with the procedure or software, I have an issue with the guide that appears to make no sense to me at all and therefore I am asking for somebody to explain the phrases in yellow above as to what in bloody hell are they talking about?

Thanks

That is confusing.

There's only two types of com cables; Serial, sometimes called straight through and Null Modem (crossover). RAD to Modem would be a Serial, whereas RAD to PC is a Null Modem.

I suspect they are referring to RAD to Modem is what they are calling direct connect. But really stupid terminology if you ask me.

You state you are trying to complete a RAD Firmware update. I have never done that, but I have used my laptop with a RAD using Norstar Remote Utilities hundreds of times to back up/restore systems/Browser Tool. What exactly are you trying to do with the RAD?
The cable I use to connect from my laptop to the RAD is a DB9 to DB9 Female to Male Straight Thru.

Hi Atcom

Per second post I am not trying to do anything except make sense of a guide that does not make sense.
As stated I have never had issues with just using the straight through cable.
Just the text in yellow was all that is wrong.

Thanks and HNY
