Hi all,

Many thanks in advance (for both reading and any replays).

We are at the stage in the completion of the RAC where we are looking at backups (well about to). We where going to use a product called netvault (which had been suggested) however bakbone (the people who produce it say it doesnt currently support rac), we currently use veritas for all backups, and know that we can this (well another version anyhow). Getting to my question, does anyone know of any other software products that will allow backups to completed on RAC to tabe?

I have done a few searchs, but carn't just see anything,

thanks for reading and any posts,

B14 aka marky boy...

Yes I know I use RMAN to actually get the backup (I could of course SQLplus), but due to cost and time, I don't want to back it up to disk and send it to the tape drive, since this would require rather a lot of disk space to be used which is not required along with causing backups to run over a long period of time, we would also have to delete the backups, you might agree that this would be quite time consuming.

We currently use Veritas, which in turn uses some RMAN scripts and writes the backups to tape. However on RAC its not quite that straight forward, since there are 4 nodes and therefore 4 instances, and we want to backup all nodes, and get all nodes to share the work out (promoting the policy of load balencing when running controlfile and datafile backups, which are stored on the disk array), so back to my original question, Can anyone who runs Oracle on RAC tell me what tape backup software they use?

Thanks again in advance, and thanks for the post,

B14....

With RMAN you need to backup the primary node only (or any of the secondary as long as you backup the archive logs from the primary also).

You can create RMAN templetes in Veritas to do this --or-- have RMAN backup directly to tape using the Veritas client.

--OR--
Create the backup jobs to tape using Enterprise Manager.

Yeah I know RMAN does all the hard work of the backups, and thats not a problem. No my question is about the tape backups. RMAN will not backup directly to tape, its my understanding that to do this RMAN has to write the backup to disk, and then streamed to tape, which seems a bit slow and cumbersome, hence the use of something like Veritas Netbackup which streams the backup to tape.

Back to my original question, has anyone got any experence with software other than Netbackup on a RAC?

Thanks again in advance,

B14...

Hi Guys,

Sorry for any confusion, think the penny has dropped, sorta understand how RMAN work with RAC now... took me long enough to understand the concept. However if anyone knows of any backup solutions on the market for RAC, please let me know...
