I would like, preferably, to have a selection formula in a view to pull documents that have a specific number. This number is generally like XX-00000. But on occasion it can be XX-00000-XX. It's the latter that I DO NOT want to show in my view. From what I've read, lotus script appears to be the solution, but since I'm fairly new to that aspect of Notes, I would like to be able to do this in the selection formula of a view. Any ideas?

Thank you for your time and consideration!

SELECT @Length(number) = 8

That should avoid anything longer getting chosen.
Script is not a solution here, since you are talking about displaying documents in a view.
You could use Script to retrieve given documents and populate a folder, but I honestly think you're better off with a selection formula like the one above.

Since you say you are new to Notes, maybe you could describe the functionality you expect from your application ? That way I might be able to help you decide which way to go about doing things.

Pascal.
