Is this possible…..?

I have a server with 2003 Std (OEM) on it, and recently got a full boxed version of R2 Std to install as a virtual server on this server. However I would now like to have R2 as the 'real' server and have the virtual one be the original OEM version.

Can we use disk 2 from the R2 version to upgrade our existing 'real' server to R2 and use the Key from the original OEM version to install the 'virtual' server. Will we be prompted to enter the new licence key if we try to upgrade the existing installation, thereby 'freeing up' the OEM key to use on the virtual server?

Hope this makes some kind of sense.........!!

Thanks in advanced for any answers.

Yes you can upgrade your OEM to R2 with out issue using your new R2 key during the upgrade. I believe the issue you will have is with your usage rights when it comes to reusing the OEM software. Generally OEM needs to remain on the hardware it was distributed with, moving the OEM to a new server even virtual would probably violate the OEM agreement. Personally i would just put the R2 in the virtual machine and leave the OEM on the physical machine.

Thanks for the reply Roadki11 - that was my concern whether a virtual machine on the original hardware was still valid for the oem install. As you say, it may be safer to install R2 as the virtual.
