R2 and DNS Updates

Shot description of the setup. I have a VM running Server 2008 R2. One NIC with two IP's bound to it. Both in the same subnet, both on the same network. DNS Tab of the NIC has "Append parent suffixes of the primary DNS suffix" uncheked, no DNS Suffixes listed, and "Register this connection's address in DNS" unchecked.

Two static DNS entries are created for the box. One is <boxname>.<domain> and is bound to the primary (1st listed) IP, and the second is <boxname-ftp>.<domain> and is bound to the second IP address. Both DNS entries were statitically created, and should not have been created using dynamic DNS within windows. Domain DNS is Server 2003 R2. NetBIOS name for the box is the same as the first DNS entry.

The problem that I am having is that a few (3-5) times a day, something in Server 2008 (Best I can tell) is causing the Forward lookup entry for the DNS entry for the primary IP address to be removed. Reverse entry still exists. It's only the forward lookup that is getting removed.

Has anyone else run into this at all? I have a different Server 2008 box that is not doing this. Could this be an R2 issue?

Thanks

Both DNS entries were statitically created, and should not have been created using dynamic DNS within windows.

"Should not" and "was not" are two different things. Open the adapter properties, then pull up the TCP/IP properties, hit the Advanced button and go to the DNS tab. Is the box labeled "Register this connections addresses in DNS" selected? If so, uncheck it on all adapters.

If you have AD, and AD-integrated DNS, and this setting is set then you are in fact using Dynamic DNS within Windows.

This is a common configuration issue with multi-homed servers.

I am not using Dynamic DNS with this server. As in my original post, I verified that the box is ineed unchecked.

Anyone have any other ideas?

I think I need my eyes checked. I saw the bit about the DNS suffixes but nothing about the registering with DNS bit.

Is IPv6 enabled on those adapters?

It's all good...we all have days like that.

IPv6 is disabled (unchecked) on the adaptor, and it's also perminantly disabled via a registry key.
