r-modem uploads/doenloads with Expect and dialup

The general feeling I got is that the r-modem binaries does not support uploading/downloading if it isn't run from a telnet session.

My problem is I have to connect to a BBS, I want to automate this using Expect. All works well until the r-modem bit is invoked, it simply doesn't work.

I could possibly use x-modem or others, anyone had any success with this using Expect? As it is x-modem was never installed on our system, it seems it's not included with the never releases of AIX anymore. Anyone got a copy floating around?
