I have several machines that I have been using all the "r" commands, rlogin rcmd.. ect.

One of my machines stopped accepting rlogin it now requires a password.

I have check my /.rhosts all OK perms 600 /etc/hosts is ok

Any ideas on what would require a password?

Thanks

Perhaps /etc/hosts.equiv ?

Hope This Helps, PH.

Make sure your /etc/hosts.equiv (and .rhosts) contain the first remote system name as it appears in /etc/hosts.

Example:
/etc/hosts
192.168.100.3 system1 system1.mydomain.com
192.168.100.4 system2 system2.mydomain.com
192.168.100.5 bobspc.mydomain.com bobspc

/etc/hosts.equiv
system1
system2
bobspc.mydomain.com

If your problems just started without any changes to any of these files, maybe there was a change in local name resolution? Try telnetting from system2 to system1, then use the "finger" command. Any discrepency from your /etc/hosts.equiv entries (even a trailing ".") can give you grief.

Do you have the same symptoms if you are "root" vs. standard user?

I do believe this is some kind of DNS issue. I changed the /etc/resolv.conf file and it does the resolution ok.

I have checked everything I know but still does not work.

Thanks
