quota help? edquota: Can't get quotafile name.

on linux redhat 8.0:

uname -a :
Linux 2.4.7-10 #1 Thu Sep 6 17:27:27 EDT 2001 i686 unknown


I get "edquota: Can't get quotafile name." when trying to set a quota for a user.

"quotacheck -avbd" comes clean ok
"fsck" comes back clean too.

any ideas?
need more ifo?

i ended up running

quotacheck -vagum

that worked but my quotas were corrupt.

oh well........
