I have been tasked with updating our programs from Office 2003 to Office 2007. I have noticed on the machine provided that when the "X" is selected in the upper right corner the workbook closes but an instance of Excel stays open.
This does not happen with either Word or Access. This causing headaches as we link from many Excel workbooks to Word documents. When the link is updated Excel opens the updated information is brought into the file, the workbook closes but the instance of Excel sits on top of Word document.
There must be a setting I have missed. I have tried googling but can't find anything.

Thanks in advance.

There is an option ... Office Button > Excel Options > Advanced tab > Display section: "Show all windows in Taskbar" .. and a similar one in Word. Check or uncheck it as you wish to make all applications consistent.

Although the underlying way in which they work differs, the behaviour of the two applicationscan be made to appear the same through the use of this option. Access works a little differently, but your question was about Excel.

Enjoy,
Tony

Tony- Thanks. That does take care of Excel not closing "correctly" when clicking on the X. Have a star.

Excel still opens when links are updated, the file closes but the instance still sits on top of the document. Another step along the way.

Just an FYI: Double Clicking the Office Button will close all workbooks and the application.

John- Thanks you are correct (as always). Anyone who in the future reads this will now know of another way.

We deal with several Word documents (templates) linked to Excel spreadsheets. We use automation to import/export Access/Excel and Word. I am trying to have these programs operate as they have in the past-- without having to manually close Excel in the middle of process.

Are you using VBA for the automation?

Yes we do use VBA for automation.

The "current" problem is when a Template first made in Word 2003 (.dot) and converted to Word 2007 (.dotm) is used to create a new document the links are updating (there are set to manual) are updating. Then an instance of Excel is staying open (the workbook does close).

You probably just need to use .Quit to close the Excel application.

If we ned to go any further, we should probably take this conversation to forum707....

When you get there, post the relevant part of your code that is running in Word.
