"Width value of letters"

Unless something new has been added recently, we can't change fonts or italicize within a field. However I can make it appear that there is a change within a field by using 2 or more fields along with the Len, and Space functions. The only problem is that it requires a fixed width font. I am trying to make it work with a variable width font.

Does anyone know where I could find (or what to look up in Help) to determine just how wide each letter of the alphabet is. For example, if the letter "i" and the number "1" are one unit wide, the letter "m" might be four or five units wide.
