"Unknown" Error when ADO Updating Excel File

I use an VB6 front application which updates an Excel file using ADO. The file is generated using Crystal Reports and then is updated later. I recently upgraded to CR 10 from CR 8 and since then the report that is generated will not update. If I use a file that was generated from the CR8 version it will update, so I think there must be something different about the excel file somewhere, but I can't find what is different. The error number I get is -2147467259, but that seems to be a general error code. The descriiption is "Unknown", which provides no help at all. The file is not read-only.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
