When logging on to an NT 4 (SP6) Workstation attached to a domain we sometimes get the following message: "The operating system was unable to load the locally stored profile. A new local profile will be created. (1450)"
Rebooting the machine and logging on (as opposed to just logging on as a different user) doesn't generate the message. This problem includes the Administrator account, which definitely has all rights on the local machine. Does anybody have any insights as to what is wrong and how to fix it?

check the network cables....are your profiles stored on the server????

This is not a wiring problem. The network is fully accessible. It appears to be a problem with the registry. When logged into the account in question and trying to register a DLL I've just created in VB I get the message "Error accessing the system registry". I subsequently tried creating a new user account and got the message "The following error occurred creating the user X. Insufficient resources exist to complete the requested service". The NTUSER.DAT file for the problem account is 1540 KB. Rebooting the machine, logging in as Administrator and creating a new user account worked fine, as did registering the newly compiled DLL. Any other suggestions?

Sorry Tom, I was in a hurry.

Go to Control Panel | System
On the performance tab click Change
Increase the Maximum Registry Size. I usually use 2 x current size
Reboot

Hope this helps.

John

Thank you very much John, that appears to solve the problem
