"Trans Return" when using Auto Intercom on a Merlin Plus system

Hopefully this will be an easy one. We've got a Merlin Plus system here, and we've got a strange problem with how the Auto Intercom feature functions. Here's what happens.

1) Pick up handset in preperation for auto-intercomming someone else. With the system's current configuration, the person holding the handset hears a dialtone, as we've got it set up to automatically give somebody one of the outside lines (we're a small company).

2) After pressing the appropriate Auto Intercom button, the line that was taken when the handset was lifted doesn't disconnect, but instead appears to try and transfer itself to the line of the person being intercommed to. This means that the receiver's phone starts beeping.

3) After the designated Transfer Return Interval has passed, the line gets bounced back to the person who initiated the intercomming in the first place, who then has to hang up on it.

This happens every time we try to use it like that. It doesn't seem to happen if we manually dial the intercom line (by pressing Intercom, then the line number), and if you hit the Auto Intercom button before picking up the handset, it doesn't try and hijack one of the main lines.

Is there any way to change this behavior? Ideally, I'd prefer it if we could set it so that hitting an Auto Intercom button will disconnect the current call, if it hasn't been put on hold. I've looked through the system manual countless times trying to find options to disable transferring, etc, but no luck.

You are SUPPOSED to press the Intercom Voice button BEFORE you pickup the handset or touch speakerphone. That's how the system is designed to work in "KEY" mode. Unless you want to change autolineselect to be one of your intercom buttons - just remember to press the appropriate intercom button (ring or voice) FIRST before picking up the handset.
