"The format of the toc file is invalid" when trying to add print queue

I am an AIX virgin so please be gentle.

I am trying to add a print queue for a network printer (Attatchment Type - hpJetDirect) but get the following message: -

Software to support the printer attachment type
you selected is not installed. Press Enter to
install software support packages for printer
attachment types (and printers).

I press enter and select CDROM drive (the Jetdirect Cd from HP is in the drive) I then get the following error: -

1800-106 An error occurred:

0503-005 installp: The format of the toc file is invalid.

And thats where I get stuck.

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

I would try manually mounting the CD and then look for a file named .toc. It and the bff and asc (I think) files AIX uses to install software may be in a subdirectory of the CD. If that is the case, rather than choose the CD device as the installation device, type the path to the directory that has the .toc file in it.

Also, have you looked at your AIX system installation CD to see if the software you need is on one of those CDs?

You need a diferent CD. On one of the AIX install CDs is an optional lpp for HP printer support.

you need to install these drivers and then you will get a display showing the hp printers which can be selected.


I think the drivers are located in the printers.rte fileset. So locate your AIX installation CDs. Insert CD1.

type smitty install
select Install & update Software
select Install & update from latest software
select input device ( press pf4 for selection )
On next panel tab down to Software to install amd press pf4

search for printers and select pf7 against the hp fileset to install.

press enter a couple of times and the fileset s will be installed for you.

Next time you go to add a printer the HP option will be displayed.
