Was making a lot of changes when this happened. Tried to open the database (Access) and got the following:

"The database has been placed in a state by user 'Admin' on machine 'My Machine' that prevents it from being opened or locked"

I was the only user.

Hope there is a way out of this, lots of hours lost if not.

Is your database trying to do anything clever with connections, and is it configured to automatically run any code on startup?

I don't know how I fixed it except that I waited bit, then went to the folder where it was located, right clicked it and selected open. It took a while but opened. Think maybe it was involved with something since it uses a couple of linked tables (as you suggested)

Thanks

In an older version of Access you used to be able to open the ".LDB" with notepad and it would show you the workstation name. Now with Office 2010, it looks encrypted... but the following link will show how to read it:

Firstly, that of course only works if you can open the database, which the OP could not. And secondly, I don't think this was anything to do with someone else being logged in to the DB. Still, possibly useful for some other time.

If it ever happens again, try opening Task Manager and see if there is more than one copy of MSACCESS.exe running on your machine. I have encountered 'hidden' copies of Word, Access, Excel before and that has caused a few weird hangs/weird results.
