"smtp" unknown: No such file or directory

I am starting up sendmail and I receive several error messages:

"smtp" unknown: No such file or directory and makeconnection: service "smtp" unknown

What am I doing wrong?

What distro are you using and did you compile and/or install sendmail yourself? How are you trying to start it?
