On occasion I get a message box that I need a "SharePoint-compatible application" to do something, such as adding a 'New Document'.

Does anyone have any insight as to what is causing this?

Hello...

This is because SharePoint v2 is only compatible with Office 2003 applications. Now, you can save files to and open files from SharePoint v2 with older version of Office. But the errors you are receiving are from fuctions within SharePoint that will interface directly with an Office 2003 application. A couple examples of this would be: as you stated, creating a new document, as well as, edit in datasheet, export to spreadsheet, and some functionality found in the image librarys, to include: uploading multiple files, editing pictures, as well as the send to fuction. There are many more im sure, but those are just a few off the top of my head. What I can tell you is that after I installed my Office 2003, my SharePoint sites were like brand new to me. There was all kinds of new stuff I could do with them.

Hope that answers your question!
