this is a very puzzling problem. I am going to give you the problem as it developed.

On another computer (my desktop) I have XP Professional installed and it works extremely well given this is an older computer.

All was well until I updated Firefox to Version 25...I was attacked by a fake Facebook virus originating from the Mozilla folder on my C drive...My Norton Security did its job and stopped the attack cold....when I was on the bowser later I noticed I had a "Bettersurf" installation that I had not authorized as the update to version 25 was automatic....I also looked in my Update options that I had in the exceptions not only Mozilla but something else added which I did not authorize (forget what it was I deleted it immediately in anger.

I disabled the Bettersurf extension and all was fine except a couple of days later three was another update from FireFox to version 25.0.01...okay I thought they are fixing that problem and updated....

all was fine for the duration of that session but next day when I started the browser...I had no access to the internet...the only thing that works is Norton Internet Security LiveUpdate...when I run their autofix there is a problem but even this software cannot communicate the problem over the web....ONLY liveupdate works.

Contacted Norton via telephone and spent an hour over the phone trying to resolve this (Firefox is no help on this issue). We take down the Norton firewall and do not enact the windows firewall....the browser still does not work. Norton suggests it is an internet provider problem.

I have 2 computers on this modem for my provider....my netbook is WiFI and the desktop is direct cable connection. Spent an hour on the phone with tech support with the provider (it is midnight so they had time)...the connection to the modem looks fine but we cannot send a PING out from my desktop.

I have uninstalled Firefox from the desktop....IE7 does not work, Skype does not work....but freaken Norton liveupdate works fine

Tech tips has always been a fine resource for solving my problems...I hope you give me some direction on this one as no one has solved it.

I have now got grave suspicions about Firefox....seems the last 2 installations are acting like a trojan now....Overall prior to this I really liked them.

Any help appreciated

Kind of a red flag for ipreset and winsockfix. Not always but enough times for the red flag to be waving.

In command prompt:
netsh int ip reset c:\ipreset.log

netsh winsock reset

From command prompt "ipconfig" and verify that you are dealing with a legitmate address. Then releast, then renew and verify again.

Next would be a test to see if it is only ping or whether you can browse to the control of the modem.

With all that OK then time for a malware search.

the response to : IPCNFIG is as follows:

Ethernet adapter local Area Connection 2:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix. : domain.invalid
IP Address .................... : 192.168.1.64
Subnet Mask ................... : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway ............... 192.168.1.254

I have lost most of my DOS skills sorry you are going to have to pell it out in detail.... "releast" is not a valid command it seems and I could not go further.

I have done a complete system scan using Norton and found nothing. I tried Norton support autofix and it failed again....but it did generate a Microsoft error report which generated first an error report with an associated file

I attached the temp file: f786_appcompat.txt
hmmmmm....I guess I cannot upload a file on inspection the report concerns the norton files which don't seem to me to be relavebt to this problem

I did find this about NIS.EXE

Nis.exe

filetype: 00000001

Should not the File ver and Prod ver match?

they do on other modules.....

fat fingered it /release should take it to 0.0.0.0

/renew should get a valid address somewhere around 192.168.1.64 from your DHCP server if you have it set to automatically assign. You can see this by CP, network controller, rt click, properties, tcpip properties.

will your browser take you to the modem via 192.168.1.254 in the address bar?

how about a tracert to google.com should be a bunch of hops noted if it is working

ipconfig /all should give a little more info, particularly DNS entries

Don't know about Norton. Haven't used any of their stuff past DOS.

I'm more concerned about the domain.invalid from ipconfig. Never have done domains so don't know if this is a reason for a possible DNS problem.

Hi

I ran IPCONFIG again and got the same message.

I tried "release" no quotes but doe not recognize the command...for the heck of it I tried "renew" and this was not recognized either

When I type IPCONFIG /ALL I get the following

"how about a tracert to google.com should be a bunch of hops noted if it is working"

I don't know how to do this but then how would this be possible without internet access on that computer??

Jim Broadbent

commands help @ ipconfig /?

DNS is the name resolver, converting from google.com to 74.125.196.102. Put the numbers in the browser address bar and see if you connect. Or using command mode tracert the string or ping the string.

You show DNS on your router. There should be something in the router that gives a valid set of server addresses or it should come from a domain, which in your case is an invalid pointer.

If you make any changes be sure to document what you had before so you can change them back when you complete the testing. If there are other computers working through the router you could get the domain name from them along with some idea of the DNS settings.

Changes I suggest below will affect any networking your computer is expected to do.

You should be able to change from domain via control panel, system, computer name, change to make it part of a workgroup. You should also be able to change the DNS servers in control panel, network connections, right click on the broadcom, properties, tcpip, properties, and put your ipaddress and mask in their spots, include the gateway address, and use google's DNS addresses 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Hi

well I brushed up a bit on dos comands and I was doing the Release and Renew wrong

I should have done IPCONFIG /release and IPCONFIG /renew

I did this and all went well.

Interesting thing is I then went to Skype and it loaded and I was able to use its test echo and it worked fine...I recorded a message and it played back to me...I could not do that before

I then loaded IE7.0 but could not connect to anything there

I have not made those changes you suggested yet
