this the question that my internet provider asked me and I don't know what that is or where how can I get it. Actualy he asked me about my ethernet mac and my usb port mac and I found out the mac of the ethernet card with the command
"ipconfig /all" at the row
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-0F-FE-1B-55-5C
.. so my real question is how do I find the mac of my usb port?

It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice.

remyvrs,

See
thread602-1092565

There is some convention to multiple posting of the same question but as I am new I am not positive of exactly what it is just know that it is not desirable.

sorry I have double poested this thread but I wasn't sure wich forum I should use for this post. But there should be a method for this thread (and others) to be posted on many forums as long as the thread, and so to be same thread and have the same reply. Actualy I thing this functionality exists but I don't know how to do it, and probably neither do you.

remyvrs,

Did the info in the other post Help??? Hope it did.
You are correct in that I do not know how to do it either...

I also want to add this as part of my signature but do not know how...I see that you have though

"I know everything...I just can't remember it all"

yes it did
thank's very much
my isp was refering at the mac in case of the ethernet and for the usb connection he gave me (after i started the thread on tek-tips) a cd with a software wich i'll install an then i'll be able to see another mac, beside the one on the ethernet adapter, according to the representant of the isp... my purpose is actualy to get internet from the usb connection because my computer (a notebook) has only one ethernet adapter and i want it to be an "server" for my second computer, of course, using the lan conncetion ... proxy ...
but i'm really worried of the fact that they will not have an appropriate software for using that usb conncetion to get internet in linux. we'll see...
if i understand well what you want to do with your signature I think it would be usefull to go your Personal Profile and you can edit your signature there.
... by the way, with this post and the next ones i'll test to see why it appears twice.

good luck!

remyvrs,

" has only one ethernet adapter and i want it to be an "server" for my second computer, of course, using the lan conncetion"

I am reading this as you have some type of broadband for your ISP??? if correct..have you considered using a "Router" behind your broadband modem? Can't draw the pic here but the rj-45 connection from the modem connects to the router...the router is also a hub and you can connect usually up to four pc's to the router....all pc's can access the web and each other through the router. Additional benefit, the router will normally include a hardware firewall for security.

This would alleviate the requirement for your additonal USB netdevice, proxy settings and gateway access

Just a thought

i don't need aditional USB netdevice beacause the ISP give's me a modem and the option to use it either by rj - 45 (LAN) or by USB. My option is what i have just written in my recent post beacause I know nothing about routers, nothing about the hardware firewall (and I want an Linux (software) firewall beacause I know it is eficient ) , but I do know a router cost about 30 $ (and makes a lot of heat in the chamber that it is used).
I would consider this option if I find some advantages.

remyvrs,
This is what I am trying to get across to you
Quoting You:
"my purpose is actualy to get internet from the usb connection because my computer (a notebook) has only one ethernet adapter and i want it to be an "server" for my second computer, of course, using the lan conncetion ... proxy ..."

You state that you want to get to the Inet from the usb...
Your Laptop also has a ethernet adapter..correct?? & you want it to be a server.
Your second computer also has an ethernet connection, right.

As I understand from you post..You are going to connect the computers through the ethernet connections, and the lap top to the internet through USB connection to the cable or DSL modem and are concerned about LINUX drivers for the USB.

With a router, both computers connect to the router via their ethernet connections....The router connects to the cable or dsl modem. No USB involved. No LINUX driver problem. No Ip addressing problems(DCHP handled by the router). Routers are stand alone in their own case, little to no heat(looks similar to a broadband modem). You get a two computer network and internet access with this.

Again I wish I could post a diagram here but don't know how.

If you still choose to connect the two computers through their ethernet ports you will have to get a crossover cable to directly connect them.

I understand very well the diagram that you are tryng to describe to me but, as I have told you the router costs 30$ and makes a lot of heat. For the moment it won't be a problem as long as i'm using win 2k on the laptop (proxy server), the only problem that exists now is the fact that I don't know what i will do when I will use Linux...

P.S. I already have a crossover cavle between my two computers

It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice.
