Hi,
Our school has a windows 2003 domain and each student/teacher logs in with their own userid and password. The problem is with office, the first time a user logs on on a different computer I get that "preparing to install" window. It does, however, go away after the first time, but it is really annoying if each student has to see that message a few times every day. Anyone know how to bypass that?

Hi ktai,

See my reply to ToaDz on a similar issue.

Of course, without changing anything in the system, you could limit this by assigning each student to a particular PC that they should always use.

Cheers

Hi could you post a link to this thread? ta

Hmm,

That thread seems to have disappeared.

Basically, my response was that this was likely to be an OS/networking issue rather than being anything to do with Office, as such.

One way that it might be possible to avoid these occurrences is to have the network propagate each user's profile to all PCs on the network. That might raise other issues, though (eg slow startup times as profiles for all users are updated on the PC).

Cheers

This happens on many systems and it appears it's the way that Microsoft/Office/Installer works.

If you install from CD, quite a lot of installs ask for the CD as well! If you install from a hidden share off the network, that shouldn't happen.

There must be information missing in the registry for Office to work as soon as a new user to that PC logs on.

I don't think without monitoring and capturing the registy you'll get away from this install.

Cheers,
Carl.
