We have a Lotus Notes/Domino server, and no one here knows how to use it. We don't use the mail feature - only shared databases with a sister company. Recently, someone deleted the profile for the person who initially set this server up. We can't seem to get into anything now, and none of our users can open the databases stored on the server.

I have looked through all the tech manuals that came with the Lotus Notes package, but they're all about development or DB administration - nothing about Domino administration.

What are my options? Is there any tech support I can call to walk me through the troubleshooting process?

Thanks in advance for taking time to respond to me.

Do you have a backup copy of your domino-directory that still contains the profile document of the person who set the server up? - The database is called names.nsf and is located in the root directory of your server.

Another option: Go to the web-site of Lotus customer support ( and see whether you can find a Technote describing a similar problem.

What about your sister company - don't they have someone who has experience in Domino server administration?

Thanks for the tips. I know we don't have a backup (but we will from now on). I'll browse through the Technotes for a solution. Thanks for that link. I've already found a solution to another problem in just the last few minutes.

Hey, geier - I'm following some step-by-step instructions now, and I'm having some difficulty. I'm not that familiar with LotusNotes terminology, so I really don't understand most of the terms. When I'm instructed to "Open the public address book" - what does that mean? Also, "open the server document for the server". LotusNotes' layout is strange and foreign to me, and I don't get it. I hate to seem like a dunce, but it's just not clicking with me. Thanks for your help.

OK - let's see whether I can help you through that. First of all: are you working with Domino release version 4 or 5?
If you are already on release 5 I would highly recommend that you install the Lotus Administrator-Client as Lotus split the clients in R5 (Mail, Designer and Administrator). If you are still on R4, all 3 clients are contained in your standard mail client, and you have no problem. But you should always administer your servers from the administrator panel, as certain functions are only available there.

Public address book is the names.nsf database. When they say that you should open the Server Document for the server they mean the Server configuration document which is part of the names.nsf (it's sitting in a view called 'configurations'). There you can view and change all the settings for your server(s).

Hope this helps. Good luck :)
