I have two pc's (Windows XP Home on both.)networked using NIC's and a Crossover cable. I bought the hardware and cable last friday and hooked up the network. It was working great until last night. ---- For the past couple of days I have had phone line problems, the phone going dead, I was told by the phone company that my modem might be causing it so I replaced the modem and sure enough, end of the phone line problems and the start of networking problems.----
Last night I replaced the modem and then booted the Host pc, and got the message "Network Cable Unhooked". I checked the cable on both ends and it is firmly attached to both NIC's. I have uninstalled the NIC's and reinstalled. Ran the XP Home Networking Wizard again which didn't help to fix the problem. The Host has an on board NIC and the Client has a RealTec. I looked on the back of the Client at the NIC and the green light isn't on.

Have tried everything I can think of to do, so I came here for help/advice.

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

If the green light isn't on, nothing will work. Are you sure the cable is a cross-over? Sounds like the cable is bad.

When you replaced the modem did any IRQ settings change? Are these PCI devices? PCI only uses 4 IRQs at a time and shares the resources. The sharing doesn't work very well. It sounds like your network was fine until the modem was replaced. Check to make sure your connections are all good, but I'm thinking it's probably a PC configuration problem if your cables are all plugged in properly.

HI Bierhunter,
I checked in system information and found that the modem and NIC are both on IRQ 12. Would that be the problem? If so, how do I fix it?

*****UPDATE******

I changed the modem to another IRQ and then tried the network and it works like a dream!

Thanks for the help, Bier!!!!
