I can send a message from my win box to another win box with the "net send IP MESSAGE" is there an equivalent command under linux ???

thanks ?

"net send" is a Mi¢ro$oft-specific protocol. No equivalent exists as an organic part of Linux's networking system. This is a good thing -- it has been promulgated by many security experts that "net send" is a major security hole in Mi¢ro$oft's networking system.

There are chat programs available, but nothing which will receive a message and display it without additional software's running. ______________________________________________________________________

Actually, you can use the "wall" or "write" command(s).

From the wall and write man pages...

wall -- send a message to everybody's terminal.

write - send a message to another user

smbclient can send messages to windows boxes from linux

smbclient -M "netbiosname"

but the netbios name in the quotes and remove the quotes.

after that hit enter and type in your message. Then hit Ctrl-D to send the message. I don't know if that will work between Linux boxes but it doesn't hurt to try. One difference between this and net send however is that you cannot use wildcards "*" in the netbiosname, thusly you can't send message through the entire domain.

Hope that helps.
