When I double click the "My Computer" icon on my desktop, the result is the old flash light searching for folders routine.

After about 30-40 seconds, the contents of "My Computer" are displayed. From there, everything is smok'n fast, unless I go back to "My Computer". Then the same delay occurs.

As a work around, I've made my own "My Computer" folder on the desktop and drug all the important stuff there - it works fine.

Similarly, if I go to a folder full of photos, then click "view as a slideshow", the same type of delay occurs again. What I get is a black screen with "Generating Preview" in white text displayed in the center of the screen. Again, after about 30-40 seconds, the slide show operates normally with very good speed. A folder with one photo acts the same as one with 100.

I've done all the AV and Spyware stuff. NAV is up to date ect...
Also ran Autoruns and CCleaner per George Ou at CNet.com – “How to fully de-gunk a PC of Crapware” article from 6-18-07

System is HP Media Center, 2G ram, Athlon 64+dual core. 250G HD & Geforce 6150LE graphics card.

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi JHuff,
Your system should be reacting quicker. It sounds like your doing some maintenance on your hard drive, keeping AV & Spyware current. I run Crap Cleaner myself, it's an excellent tool. If I'm reading right, you have photos stored in different folders. I'm not sure how much you add/delete/move files but that can slow things down. I see you're running NAV. If you have Systems Works, click on the Utilities tab & select Optimize Performance -> Speed Disk. It's basically the same as Windows System Tools - Disk Defragmentation. I run them both on a regular basis as I download & try out many applications. You moght want to try Task Manger when you're encountering these problems to see what resources you're using up. There's an excellent (& free) program available for download called Process Explorer. It will tell you what processes your computer is running (& who created it) at the time. It's available thru PC World. If you'd like, I'll send the site to you.
Hope this is a help. SirBlack
