I am having a disagreement with my business partner. He wants to put "last modified - date" and "best viewed in msie 4.0/ns 4.0" in the upper right corner of a client's new website in small print. I think it's obsolete, he thinks its helpful to surfers. Opinions, please ??
thanks..

of course it would be helpful, if a user really likes your site and wanted to get the full experience of everything you were offering...if it is better viewed at said res, or with said browser then maybe they would be tempted to change the way they view the web..or atleast upgrade there browser...i wish i could rely on the fact that everyone had 17"monitors and viewed at 1024/768...life would be good...knowing this can't be a reality atleast if you could get them to upgrade there browser they might get some of what you are offering!

just my opinion..

Keep your page size width limited to the 600 range and this will cover most everyone. Good designers design for everyone not just those with this browser or that resolution.

My two cents! DeZiner

My tuppence worth:

Having a last revised or updated date is fine but only if you actually update the site fairly regularly. That way people know that your site is active and isn't a site that has been abandoned. I update my site at least once a week so I include a line that states that but it isn't on the home page. If I went to a site and it said "Last updated: October 2000" I would be out again sharpish.

As for best viewed in Browser X or Y and Resolution "whatever" - I would never put that. If your designing a site, it should be "best viewed" by the vast majority of visitors. And never put those little logos and links to download the browser required. Joe Bananas

i think it depends on the user if he wants to see the 'best viewed' or the 'last updated' text on your site.

"Best Viewed in" tells me the designer is puzzled by other browsers other than his own.

thanks for all the input. it helped us do some tweaking, but he still left it in... oh well.
