I have a IBM 40GB hard drive. After a series of error messages relating to my hard disk, I was forced to format the hard disk and do a clean install of windows. Booting to DOS from a boot floppy, I tried "format C:" only to recieve the aforementioned "invalid media type" error. I now cannot boot from HD and if I type "C:\ dir" in DOS i also recieve the same error message.
Any ideas?

DOS versions have problems with stuff fdiskd with later versions of windows.
Pick a version you will stay with, fdisk and remove partition, create and make active, and try again.
Or leave the drive unpartitioned and boot from the CD and let it install. Ed Fair
