I recently did some work a HP Pavilion 7966 for a client, and the end result is that her WD drive had failed. I ordered a new drive and installed Windows XP Home without any problems, but the old drive (which is failing, but still readable) has a partition marked HP_Recovery which I assume has the HP appications on it.

I have been unsuccessful at reading/copying the contents of this partition onto the new drive even though I have a partition of the same size. It seems that the HP_Recovery partition uses some unusual filsystem and I can't seem to recover this data.

Before I give the machine back to the client, I figured I'd ask if anyone here has had any success. If I can't do it, I won't worry too much, but I'd like to give it back to the client with the same applications it had before, if possible.

Any ideas?

Wishdiak,
I believe the HP recovery partition uses a FAT12 or 16
FS.

Did your client get any restore CD's with this PC?

You may also be able to use the Western utility cd and do a Drive to Drive copy. Just make sure you understand which one is the source drive and which one is the destination.

mainegeek,

I don't think she ever had any recovery CD's. HP typically puts that information in a partition on the hard drive (according to their support page) at least.

I've tried copying the data with Seagate's diagnostic CD and with Norton Ghost, but I'll give the WD utilities a try. It can't hurt.
