I have a Gantt-style "chart" that I've build using JPanels as a representation of days of the week, and I'm using the 2D API to draw rectangles representing project timelines across the day-panels. I need to label these rectangles with job numbers ... is this possible to do with any sort of label or text component that allows a x,y addressable position?

I haven't used that at all, but i guess you should try the JLayeredPane. It seems to give you some sort of 3D in Swing as you can place components on different layer. So you should be able to place some panel on top of all other components
