"Error Detected by Database DLL" generated when using AddADOCommand

Using VB6 & CR8 (Developers Ed). Calling a stored procedure on SQL Server to return a resultset to be incorporated into a report using unbound fields. Getting the following error on the AddADOCommand method: "Error detected by database DLL."
Crystal acknowledges that is a known issue: Article ID: c20066871, Tracking ID: 35890.

Is there any known solution or work around for this issue?
