"Encoded Data Checksum Mismatch" when Detaching Attachments

We often get the following message when we try to launch or detach a document that we attached to an email or one of our database forms.

Encoded Data Checksum Mismatch - Attachment may be corrupted......

If we delete the attachment and re-attach it, it seems to be fine. Does anyone know what causes this?
