I will be getting a new 7026-6H1 system in a few weeks. It is configured almost like an existing 7026-H80 with these exceptions: the 6H1 does not have a SCSI IO card that the H80 does. The 6H1 CPUs are RS64 IV instead of RS64 III. The 6H1 has half the memory that the H80 does.

Are these systems enough alike that I will be able to use a mksysb tape to get the 6H1 up and running with everything configured (except for non-rootvg volume groups and logical volumes) in a couple of hours?

Boot off the CD and select "Install from system backup". This will give you the best result. Do NOT just install the mksysb. Very bad. Very bad.

Bill.

My two cents.............

Some of the newer machines require the latest maintenance level...Make sure
that the backup off your old machine is at the latest maintenance level.....
AND you have all device drivers loaded on the old machine for the new machine...
Before you do a backup...

You can run the instfix command to see what level of aix you are at:
instfix -i |grep ML

If it says not all filesets for a particular level are not installed you can run

To see what needs to be installed to bring you up to a particular
maintenance level:

# instfix -ivk 4330-06_AIX_ML|grep not | grep ':'

You can apply these filesets from an update cd or downloaded individually
off the web. 'oslevel' command will still indicate AIX 4.3.3.0.
instfix -ik 4330-08_AIX_ML
If the output indicates that not all filesets are found, you can also
determine which filesets are not updated using the command:
instfix -ciqk 4330-08_AIX_ML | grep ":-:"

There really can be problems with equipment not working correctly etc....and
if something is loaded on the new machine that you do not have a floppy for or
do not have the software for, you are toast.

At very least I would do a mksysb of the preloaded machine......(new machine) after it is loaded.........in case.........at least you can go back to that if something else fails with your mksysb restore.......

You can migrate users manually....which is usually safer.....
