"cannot find winbios.exe" error

whenever i try to open an application on my thinkpad, i get the following error dialog box:

program not found

windows cannot find winbios.exe
this program is needed for opening files of the
type "application"

the odd thing is that i can open the programs when i open them from a saved file (such as wordpro) but not when i try to open the application alone.

i have looked for info on this problem with no luck

anyone have any suggestions?

This sounds like a variant on one of the more popular trojan horses.

Winbios.exe is a diagnostic tool and shouldn't be associated with a program file type. I could be wrong but the symptoms seem very suspicious. My suggestion would be to contact Symantec and pass this information to the qualified authority:
