I am working on an HP dv6-2157wm with an Intel Core i3 and Windows 7. I know nothing of the history of this particular computer as I'm just fixing it for a friend. Upon startup it gives the "bootmgr is missing" error. Attempted every type of repair that I can think of (fixmbr, fixboot, repair installation bootrec, etc.) The recovery tools don't display the Windows installation, but I read that it didn't necessarily matter. I tried to do a fresh install on 7, but when attempting, I get the "missing cd/dvd drive device driver" error. I have also tried installing from an external DVD drive and got the same result. Went through each driver I could find on the hard drive, but none seemed to match what it was looking for. Also, loaded the ISO on a USB drive and attempted to install, but I am receiving an "Invalid system disk" error. Is there anything that I'm overlooking? I have read probably 30 different supposed fixes for each of these issues and I just keep running into roadblocks.

Thanks!

Have you considered that the machine has had a major hardware failure and needs replacing or repairing faulty hardware? I ask that as it seems you have covered all the usual fixes.

The hard drive manufacturer will have free diagnostic software that is bootable, or that may even run from within Windows, that will thoroughly check the condition of your hard drive.

Have you looked at the Bios, perhaps setting that to the safe default settings?

Does something like BartPE run on that machine?

Can you explore (examine) the hard drive if you use something like the Adapters mentioned in this?

An after thought that I had was that the access permissions for the C: drive are incorrect with nothing (users, System, etc.) able to access the drive? If you get BartPE loaded you could temporarily change the access permission to the C: drive so it will allow "Everyone" access.

Thanks for the response! It has passed all the internal diagnostics. I will check the BIOS and see where I can get with BartPE. I've had some success with it in the past with other issues.

Windows 7 and Windows 2008 R2, on certain hardware, will lose the Optical drive...

usually workaround is to use an external DVD (but not all will work)...

suggestion:

use a USB bootable stick...
